Penta has earned one of the biggest opportunities of his WWE career after defeating his own brother, Rey Fenix, in an emotional main event on Monday Night RAW.
The August 31 edition of WWE RAW ended with the final of the World Heavyweight Championship No. 1 Contender’s Tournament, with Penta and Fenix meeting one-on-one in WWE for the first time.
There was plenty at stake for both brothers. The winner would become the next challenger for Roman Reigns and his World Heavyweight Championship.
Despite their close family connection, neither man held back once the bell rang.
Penta and Fenix immediately showed how well they know each other, exchanging counters and early pin attempts before the pace quickly increased.
Fenix gained momentum with a hurricanrana and looked to take the action into the air, but Penta stopped him before connecting with a dive to the outside.
Fenix soon responded with an Adios Amigo kick and a corkscrew splash, sending his brother crashing to the floor.
Back inside the ring, Fenix connected with a handspring cutter for a close two-count before adding a series of spinning wheel kicks. Penta responded with a superkick in the corner and a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker, but that was still not enough to secure the victory.
The brothers continued to push each other to their limits.
Fenix managed to avoid a Mexican Destroyer on the apron and followed with a huge moonsault. Penta later survived a Backstabber in the corner as both men continued searching for the move that would finally end the contest.
Penta appeared to have the match won after launching Fenix with a huge front-flip drop powerbomb, but Fenix somehow kicked out before the referee could count to three.
The closing stages became even more dramatic.
Penta attempted the Destroyer, only for Fenix to escape and connect with a kick. Fenix then looked for the Mexican Musclebuster, but Penta escaped and delivered the Penta Driver.
Fenix once again kicked out.
The action then spilled outside, where Penta followed his brother towards the announce desk and delivered another Penta Driver, this time sending Fenix through the table.
Remarkably, Fenix managed to return to the ring and once again survived the following pin attempt.
Penta then connected with Sacrifice before attempting another Destroyer. Fenix countered with a hurricanrana into a pinning combination, but Penta escaped at two.
That proved to be Fenix’s final opportunity.
Penta quickly recovered and finally connected with the Mexican Destroyer, keeping his brother down for the three-count and securing his World Heavyweight Championship opportunity.
It was a huge victory for Penta, but there was little time to celebrate.
World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns made his way to the ring following the match and stood face-to-face with his new challenger.
After having to overcome his own brother to earn the opportunity, Penta now has an even bigger challenge ahead of him as he prepares to step into the ring with The OTC.
