Johnny Gargano Finally Stands Up and Challenges CM Punk for WWE Title

Johnny Gargano finally got back on his feet during Friday night’s WWE SmackDown tapings, and it happened in front of his hometown crowd in Cleveland.

For much of 2026, Gargano has been involved in an unusual running storyline that has seen him “planking” during backstage segments on WWE television. That all changed when WWE rolled into Cleveland on Friday.

During a backstage segment involving SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis and WWE Champion CM Punk, Gargano was presented with an opportunity that was simply too big to ignore.

Punk offered Gargano a match for the WWE Championship.

That was enough motivation for Gargano to finally stand up and accept the challenge, bringing the long-running planking storyline to an end, at least for the night.

Gargano went on to challenge Punk for the championship in front of his hometown fans. Punk ultimately retained the title, but the occasion still marked an important moment for Gargano.

It was his first match in more than four months, having last competed in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal on April 17, 2026.

Following the match, Gargano addressed the Cleveland crowd and reflected on how meaningful it was to share the ring with Punk in the city where his own wrestling dreams began.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I want to say one thing.

“Back when I was just a fan, sitting in those stands, I vividly remember a moment where a young CM Punk had a dark match here in Cleveland, Ohio. And as a fan, I remember seeing that and going, ‘That’s CM Punk. He’s one of the best in the world. He belongs here.’

“And to be able to get in this ring in my hometown with the best in the world, with the WWE Champion, CM Punk has made his debut on SmackDown.

“Guys, I am here to tell you, for anyone out there in the crowd, if you have a dream, if you want to do something, if you work hard enough, you can make anything happen in this life time.”

It was a special homecoming moment for Gargano, who went from watching Punk perform in Cleveland as a fan to eventually standing across the ring from him with the WWE Championship on the line.

Clips from the taping have since appeared online, giving fans a look at Gargano’s return to action and his emotional words following the match.

What did you make of Johnny Gargano finally standing up, and would you like to see him receive another WWE Championship opportunity? Let us know in the comments.
