AJ Lee’s WWE future has received a fresh backstage update amid growing speculation over whether the former champion could return to television.

Lee has not appeared on WWE programming since WrestleMania 42, where she lost the Women’s Intercontinental Championship back to Becky Lynch on Night 2.

Following the match, Lee shared an emotional message with fans that appeared to signal the end of that chapter of her career. However, she stopped short of announcing another retirement and left the door open for a possible return.

According to Fightful Select, WWE sources do not believe Lee has competed in her final match. Despite that belief, there is currently no timetable for her return, and WWE reportedly has nothing booked for her at this stage.

Speculation surrounding Lee has increased following Paige becoming involved in a storyline with Nikki and Brie Bella. After the Bellas attacked Paige at SummerSlam, some fans immediately suggested Lee could become involved due to her history with both Paige and the Bella Twins.

However, Fightful reports that WWE creative sources had not heard of any plans to bring Lee into the storyline. Those involved in the angle were also reportedly unaware of any plans for Lee before Brie Bella suffered an injury.

With Brie now sidelined, WWE is continuing the storyline involving Paige and Nikki Bella.

There is still reason for fans to believe Lee could wrestle again. WWE never promoted her WrestleMania 42 appearance as a retirement match or farewell, while Lee herself has previously spoken about being open to whatever opportunities come her way.

Ahead of WrestleMania 42, Lee described this stage of her wrestling career as “extra credit” and said she was willing to see what other “fun things” might be ahead.

Lee has also named several current WWE stars she would be interested in facing, including Rhea Ripley, Liv Morgan, Roxanne Perez, Stephanie Vaquer and Lyra Valkyria.

For now, there appears to be no immediate return planned, but the latest backstage word suggests fans may not have seen the last of AJ Lee inside a WWE ring.
