Country music legend and global entertainment icon Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80, bringing to an end one of the most remarkable careers in American entertainment history.

Parton's death was announced on Tuesday, August 25, by her nephew Bryan Seaver. The news has prompted tributes from across music, film and entertainment for a performer whose career spanned more than six decades.

Born in Tennessee in 1946, Parton rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most recognisable entertainers in the world.

Her catalogue included classics such as "Jolene," "Coat of Many Colors," "9 to 5" and "I Will Always Love You," with the latter later becoming an enormous international hit for Whitney Houston.

Parton sold more than 100 million records during her career and received numerous honours, including Grammy Awards and inductions into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Away from music, she became a successful actress, businesswoman and philanthropist. Her Imagination Library programme distributed books to children around the world, while Parton also famously donated $1 million towards research that contributed to the development of a COVID-19 vaccine.

For wrestling fans, one particularly memorable piece of Parton's extraordinary career came during the height of Hulkamania.

In 1987, Hulk Hogan appeared alongside Parton on her ABC television variety series Dolly. Hogan was then WWF Champion and one of the biggest celebrities in America following the explosion of WrestleMania and WWF's national expansion.

Rather than simply interviewing Hogan, Parton fully embraced the outrageous world of professional wrestling.

She created the wrestling-themed song "Headlock on My Heart," with Hogan starring in an accompanying comedy music video.

The idea reportedly came after Parton saw a tabloid prediction claiming she would fall in love with and marry a 300-pound professional wrestler. In typical Dolly fashion, she decided to have some fun with the story.

Hogan appeared in his famous red-and-yellow wrestling gear and portrayed a wrestler named Starlight Starbright.

The video even featured an actual WWF performer, "Iron" Mike Sharpe, as Hogan's opponent. After winning his match, Hogan's character eventually ended up marrying Parton - inside a wrestling ring.

It was an extraordinary collision of two of the biggest parts of 1980s American popular culture: country music and Hulkamania.

The timing of their collaboration was particularly significant. Hogan was at the absolute peak of his WWF popularity in 1987, having defeated Andre the Giant in the legendary main event of WrestleMania III earlier that year.

Parton's willingness to feature Hogan so prominently on mainstream network television demonstrated just how far professional wrestling had travelled into popular culture.

Hogan was no longer simply a wrestling star. He was appearing alongside some of America's biggest entertainment personalities , and Dolly Parton was unquestionably among them.

Their wonderfully over-the-top "Headlock on My Heart" collaboration remains a fascinating snapshot of that era, with footage of Parton and Hogan together continuing to circulate among wrestling fans decades later.

Parton's appeal ultimately went far beyond country music.

She crossed generations and entertainment genres while retaining the humour and personality that made her instantly recognisable. Her death also comes a little over a year after Hogan's death in July 2025, making footage of their memorable 1987 collaboration especially poignant for longtime wrestling fans.

Dolly Parton leaves behind an extraordinary body of work and a cultural legacy few entertainers could ever hope to match.

For professional wrestling fans, she will also have a small but unforgettable place in wrestling history.
