On This Day In WWE History: Lex Luger vs Yokozuna - Summerslam 1993

In 1993, Lex Luger made his debut as “The Narcissist” with Bobby “The Brain” Heenan alongside as his manager. Towards mid-summer, he transformed from heel to face. At this point, Yokozuna had challenged all Americans to attempt to slam him and he would have this monumental event take place aboard the USS Intrepid on America’s birthday. That day, superstars and football players alike attempted to slam the World Champion with no success.

The event appeared to be over. Until a chopper flew across the sky landing on the launching pad. The door opened to reveal one more challenger who would step up and attempt to slam Yokozuna. That challenger was Lex Luger. He stepped into the ring and with little effort lifted the champion off his feet and slammed him.  It was referred to as the slam heard round the world.

This set up a World Championship match between Yokozuna and Lex Luger which would take place at the following month’s Summerslam. In the weeks  leading up to the match, Luger had toured the country in his Lex Express campaigning for a championship match which he would ultimately receive with a stipulation that it would be his one and only shot. With the use of the plate in his forearm he was victorious  via countout over the World Champion

You can witness Luger’s victory over Yokozuna in the video below
