Column: Monday Night Raw Theme Change

Posted By: Blake Blaze on Feb 22, 2012

Dear Blazers,

I thought I’d really change the formula of my typical columns and tackle something that drives me crazy every single Monday Night. And that my friends, is the disgrace of a theme that Monday Night Raw has been using over the past two and a half years. I’ll try not to get started on how abysmal I think Nickelback is in general and instead list the last four RAW themes starting from the worst to the best. Then I’ll go ahead and make my suggestion for what song I feel should be the new theme. I’m not doing all of the intros because I don’t have enough time or patience to sort through all of the looped generic rock instrumentals used for a brief period of time. You don’t have to agree, share your opinions in the comment section and let me know how you’d list them and what song you’d like to hear blast Pre-RAW every Monday Night.

4. Burn It to the Ground – Nickelback

This is by far the most unbearable theme the WWE has chosen for Monday Night Raw. It doesn’t get me pumped up for the action to follow and it absolutely reeks of sold out mainstream rock (I wonder why?).  It sounds more like something you’d hear being played at a High School party rather than welcoming in two hours of wrestling entertainment. It doesn’t fit the mood of the show…unless they were going for simplistic, momentarily bland and a shadow of its former self. Well…maybe it does fit the mood a little bit. I’m keeping this short because if I continue going, this column will become more about my disdain for Nickelback than my love for the WWE.

3. To Be Loved – Papa Roach

In my opinion, this was where the WWE started to go wrong with show themes. While I did have the song on my iPod previous to the WWE making it the RAW theme song, it became increasingly annoying to hear “wOOooOOooohhI just wanna be wanna be looOooOOOooOOoooOOved.” Sure it wasn’t a terrible song but it wasn’t deserving of being the theme to the most popular show in Professional Wrestling.

2. Thorn in Your Eye – Scott Ian (Anthrax)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVIDkgTw4FE

I know for a fact I just made some jaws drop. Let me guess, you were certain this was going to be #1 right? Now please understand, I freaking loved this intro. And there is a huge difference in my #1/#2 picks and the #3/#4 picks. It was a really close race for me when it came down to #1 and #2. I think this song gets a little bit more love from the fans simply because of the ERA it represented. If it were judged as the intro alone, I don’t think it would be AS highly regarded as it is. That being said, I loved this theme. It instantly got you pumped up for what you knew was going to be a great show. It represented the ERA extremely well and I couldn’t imagine the Attitude ERA using anything different. Complete awesomeness.

1. Across the Nation – The Union Underground

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WuR6tCaU7Y

To me, this theme takes the cake as far as being the best theme RAW has ever used. It represented it’s ERA extremely well and it had the perfect blend of grittiness, attitude and flash to give a perfect description of the product. Hell I think I’d be perfectly fine with RAW using this theme to this day and never making a switch to those other two songs. But all good things must come to an end and this song met its unfortunate fate in 2006. It was amazing while it lasted.

Now as fun as all of that was, it’s time to get to my pick for the new Monday Night Raw theme.  Now I’ll be honest and say my pick is slightly bias because I’m a huge fan of the band. But I think it possesses the right amount of attitude and flash to get people pumped up for Monday Night Raw again. It’s got enough old school and new school to appeal to both sides of the fan spectrum. The song isn’t even released yet as the album releases in April. Which by the way, would be a perfect month to make the theme switch considering RAW will look different after the Draft episode in April. Without any further ado, I present my pick:

Let the Sparks Fly – Thousand Foot Krutch
