In late 2004, two extremely controversial characters made their debut in World Wrestling Entertainment. Muhammad Hassan and his manager/part-time tag team partner Shawn Daivari (known as Khosrow Daivari in WWE) were two Arab-American competitors who were tired of being discriminated against because of their race and nationality.
For months on WWE's Monday Night Raw program, Hassan and Daivari went on an absolute tirade. They demanded to be given the same equal opportunities as every other Superstar on WWE's roster, and they demanded to be given the same courtesy and respect as all other Americans. At one point, Muhammad Hassan appeared to have captured the prestigious WWE Intercontinental Championship from then-Champion Shelton Benjamin, however, the referee of the match soon revoked his decision due to Benjamin's foot being underneath the ring ropes during the pinfall, which requires the referee to stop counting regardless if the competitor's shoulders are on the mat. Benjamin ended up retaining his Intercontinental Title.
At WWE WrestleMania 21, Hassan and Daivari began feuding against the biggest Superstar in pro wrestling history, "The Immortal" Hulk Hogan. While Hassan and Daivari were assaulting the mentally challenged former WWE star known as Eugene Dinsmore (the storyline nephew of Eric Bischoff), Hogan made his return to WWE one night after being inducted into the 2005 WWE Hall of Fame. This all led to a battle which saw Hassan and Daivari going against the team of Hulk Hogan and "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels. Hassan and Daivari were defeated by the two legends.
Soon after, Hassan and Daivari were moved from WWE's Monday Night Raw program to the SmackDown brand as part of the 2005 WWE Draft. This was the beginning of the end for the Muhammad Hassan character, as he and Daivari became even more controversial and began to garner even more attention from media outlets outside of WWE. It was eventually decided that WWE would have to do away with the Hassan character.
At the 2005 WWE Great American Bash pay-per-view, Muhammad Hassan was quite literally sent to the depths of Hell by one of WWE's most legendary and iconic Superstars, "The Phenom" The Undertaker. In a shocking turn of events, Undertaker gave Hassan the Last Ride Powerbomb through the entrance ramp, effectively "murdering" Hassan and killing off his television character. This was the last time that Muhammad Hassan was ever seen in wrestling.
Daivari however would soon return to WWE and become of the top heels (bad guys) in the company. He became a manager for various Superstars, including Kurt Angle, "The World's Strongest Man" Mark Henry, and finally the 7'3", 420-pound Punjabi Warrior known as The Great Khali.
After bouncing around between WWE's three brands at the time, Raw, SmackDown, and ECW: Extreme Championship Wrestling, Daivari asked for his release from WWE in October of 2007.
In the summer of 2008, Total Nonstop Action Impact Wrestling hosted their 2008 World X-Cup Tournament. Four different teams from around the world (U.S.A., Mexico, Japan, and International) were formed to compete in this X-Division tournament. The Captain of Team International was Daivari. Though Team International was unsuccessful in the 2008 World X-Cup, Daivari did impress TNA officials, who offered him a contract to remain with the promotion full-time. Daivari soon changed his name to his "royal Middle Eastern name" of Sheik Abdul Bashir, also nicknamed "The Middle Eastern Nightmare."
Throughout 2008 and 2009, "The Middle Eastern Nightmare" Sheik Abdul Bashir was a fairly dominant force in TNA's X-Division. Bashir became not only the top heel of the X-Division, but also one of the top heels in the entire TNA Impact Wrestling promotion. His in-ring abilities and microphone skills were second-to-none, and many fans appreciated Bashir's overall charisma and presence on TNA programming, in spite of the fact that he was meant to be a hated villain.
However, in late 2009, after a dispute with TNA management, Sheik Abdul Bashir parted ways with Total Nonstop Action Impact Wrestling. Since leaving TNA, Daivari has competed in various wrestling promotions around the world, including TNA's Indian promotion, Ring Ka King (King of the Ring).
As of this typing, the current TNA Impact Wrestling X-Division Champion is the extremely talented, yet extremely cocky and arrogant "A Double" Austin Aries. Austin Aries has been the TNA X-Division Champion since September of 2011, and has defeated virtually all of the X-Division stars, including: Alex Shelley, Kid Kash, Brian "Spanky" Kendrick, Zema Ion, Jesse Sorensen, Mark Haskins, and Anthony Nese. Nobody has been able to stop the man who refers to himself as "The Greatest Man That's Ever Lived."
TNA's X-Division has become complacent and nearly irrelevant, despite efforts from TNA management to try to rejuvenate the division in late 2011. Shawn Daivari is one of the greatest X-Division style competitors in the world today, and is seemingly a mere phone call away from returning to TNA. Between his in-ring skills, microphone skills, and unbelievable ability to draw heat from the wrestling fans, why wouldn't TNA officials want this uniquely gifted performer on their roster?
