Dear Blazers,
I promise that Iāll eventually be releasing a column to you guys that isnāt criticizing the WWE. Being the snarky cynical columnist is overplayed so Iāve avoided making it my shtick. Instead, Iām more interested in giving you guys the truth. Now whether that truth is positive or negative, is entirely up to the WWE and other Wrestling outlets. I bring to you guys another grave problem with the current product that calls itself Wrestling Entertainment. And that my awesome readers, is the horrific state of the current WWE Heel. Yes, Iām referring to the current heels as if theyāre one sole entity. Why? Becauseā¦well arenāt they?Ā
One of the greatest things about watching wrestling when I was growing up wasnāt necessarily having a hero to root for as much as a villain to root against. And one of the most important factors of being a villain to root against was being a formidable foe to the hero. There had to be a certain amount of believability that the bad guy could top the good guyā¦otherwise it was just pointless right? Watching guys like The Rock, Stone Cold, Triple H, Bret Hart, Kurt Angle, Chris Jericho, Shawn Michaels and so forth was great because you knew that they could hold their own against even the best good guy. Even guys like Edge, Randy Orton and Batista entered the main event scene as believable powerful heels. You knew that any of those guys could come out on top if the opportunity presented itself. There are two very large problems with the way the WWE is handling their current heels and weāre going to go over both of them.Ā Winning Clean: I think this reasoning pretty much speaks for itself doesnāt it? When was the last time that you saw a heel win cleanly against a legitimate face? You probably wonāt be able to pinpoint the day because I donāt think itās happened in years. What WWE Creative is failing to understand is that itās okay for a heel to win cleanly. As a matter of fact, Iād rather watch one heel that is good enough to win clean than a whole series of them that have to cheat to get the win. Sure you have your squash matches where guys like Barrett completely obliterate the bottom of the rosters guys like Heath Slater and Santino Marella. But what exactly am I supposed to find impressive about that? Should Barrett beating Heath Slater in 90 seconds convince me that he can stand toe to toe with Randy Orton? Hell no it shouldnāt. There isnāt anything wrong with a little bit of mischief on occasion but letās let our heels look like they can hold their own guys.Ā Cowardice Characters: If somebody asked you to define any heel in the WWE right now, I guarantee āCowardiceā would be one of the words you used to describe them. There isnāt a single heel in the WWE right now that isnāt a little bit of a coward. What happened to the guys that werenāt afraid to look you in the eye and exchange punches with the good guy without so much as flinching? Sure, most heels have always had a little bit of a cowardice thing going for them. But never in the history of the WWE has it been so prevalent. Name all of the WWE heels right now and Iād be willing to bet that every single one of them has walked away from a fight at some point over the last year. Even the heels that are getting pushed at the moment (ex. Ziggler, Barrett, Alberto Del Rio and The Miz) are cowards. On top of that, where is the difference in character? Barrett, Ziggler, Del Rio, Rhodes, Miz, Christian, Bryan and so on, are all pretty boy characters that revolve around being cowardice, obnoxious, cocky, arrogant and self-absorbed. There is no difference in any of these characters aside from the way they look and talk. Donāt be afraid to branch out and dish us something new Vince, we may just like it.Ā The WWE is in dire need of some serious change but very few changes are needed more than this one. Face vs. Heel matches have been like a chess game with missing pieces. Very rarely do you sit down and watch an Orton, Cena, Sheamus or Big Show match and think that they could possibly lose cleanly. Very rarely do you sit down and watch a Ziggler, Barrett, Rhodes or Bryan match and think theyāre going to prove theyāre a real force against the faces. Nobody wants to watch Superman wrestle a paraplegic but I feel like thatās what weāre being served match after lopsided match. As Eames would say, āYou mustnāt be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling.āĀ As always, thanks for checking out the column. You guys (and gals) are awesome and I canāt wait to see what you have to say about the topic. Let me know what you think in the comments section!Ā
